Camp Experience
Psychological Services
An Important Part of our Program
Along with HIV/AIDS comes a whole host of difficult issues: grief, isolation, unstable home lives and anger, to name a few. Many of our campers are or have been caregivers to their ill parents. Some of our campers are sole survivors of their family. Others bounce from home to home, living with extended relatives or foster families.
Each summer, our Social Work and Psychology professionals collaborate with our summer camp staff to help campers and staff work through their problems. Whether campers need help processing new emotions brought to the surface by their first open AIDS discussions, need assistance dealing effectively with pent-up anger, or they just need another caring person to listen, our volunteers are great resources available to the entire camp community.
Psychological Services Coordinator & Summer Intern
Our Psychological Services Coordinator & Interns have expertise working with children in one or more of the following areas, including but not limited to: HIV/AIDS, pediatric issues, crisis intervention, psychosocial and crisis counseling, child development and behavior management.
If you are a professional with a degree (or working towards a degree) in social work, psychology, mental health or a related field, and you would like to volunteer or work at camp, please visit the Staff- How to Apply area of our website. Camp Heartland looks for consistency in its Psychological Services Program and will accept applications from professionals that can commit a complete summer to working at camp.
