Progressive Camp Leadership Programs
Camp Heartland's progressive leadership programs allow campers to gain new skills and experiences as they grow up. There are three levels to these programs:
· The Adventure Program (AP) – for 14-15-year-olds – is held at each summer camp session. AP campers explore teamwork, communication and self-confidence on adventures ranging from off-site opportunities to challenge course activities, orienteering and camping on site.
· Sixteen-year-old Leaders In Training (LIT) are selected to attend two summer sessions. The first week, LITs learn responsibility, effective communication, conflict resolution and basic counseling skills. The second week, LITs move into leadership positions at camp and assist the staff. LITs are selected through an application and interview process and positions are limited.
· Seventeen-year-olds, typically former LITs, may apply to be Junior Counselors (JC). JCs attend the regular summer staff training, and work as junior level counselors or “behind the scenes” assistant during camp. JCs gain real work experience while benefiting from extra supervision and group processing opportunities.
