    FAQs Summer Camp

    1. Who can come to Camp Heartland?
Camp Heartland welcomes children from across the nation, ages 7 to 15, who either have HIV/AIDS or who have an immediate family member who have, or had, HIV/AIDS, to its regular camping programs and year-round community. Youth living with or affected by HIV/AIDS, age 16-21, may participate in the Youth Retreat Program offered each year in the fall.

    2. What does Camp Heartland do for the kids in its program?
Camp Heartland creates a year-round community by holding camping programs throughout the year so kids can build skills, friendships and memories to give them support and hope throughout the year. Camp Heartland helps campers maintain their connection to the camp community through Life Enhancement Programs, including newsletters, phone calls and holiday and birthday gifts. In addition, Camp Heartland is a stable resource to campers and their families, no matter what family changes take place during the year.

    3. Where is Camp Heartland?
Camp Heartland owns a camp facility, the Camp Heartland Center, in Willow River, Minnesota. Throughout the year, Camp Heartland holds its camping programs at the Camp Heartland Center, with the exception of one session held each August at a beautiful, rented camp in Malibu, California. Year-round Life Enhancement and AIDS Awareness programs, however, are based out of corporate offices in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Minneapolis, Minnesota.

    4. How much does it cost the families to send the kids to camp?
Camp Heartland programs are provided free of charge to campers and their families. Families, who are able, are asked to pay a $50 registration fee per child or $100 maximum for multiple children. A sliding fee scale and scholarships are available for families in need of a more flexible payment schedule.

    5. What is the cost to Camp Heartland, per camper?
Camp Heartland must raise $3,000 to provide each camper with year-round services including camping and year-round programming. One week of summer camp, including food, staff, medical and psychological support, travel and programming, costs approximately $1,500. Each summer, Camp Heartland welcomes approximately 450 children to summer camp. An additional 200 children participate in year-round programs.
