Let's do #*$%! lunch
Written By: Kathy Flanigan
2/26/2003
The occasion was to honor Nile Sandeen, a 17-year-old AIDS activist from Milwaukee, and 19 other outstanding teens who are using their talents to change the world.
It ended up with Sharon Osbourne donating $30,000 to Camp Heartland, the camp for kids who are HIV-positive.
"It's my honor to give them the money for their summer camp," Osbourne said by phone from New York, where the awards luncheon was held. "He's an unbelievable young man. I wanted to do something."
See, not an expletive in the sentence.
Sandeen was honored for his work as a counselor at the camp - and for being the inspiration behind Camp Heartland, based in Milwaukee. He will receive a $1,000 scholarship from L'Oreal Paris. He also got the chance to break bread with other honorees such as Kelly Osbourne, rapper Bow Wow and actor David Gallagher of "Seventh Heaven," nominated for his work as an autism activist. Sandeen called the luncheon "so alive and happy."
Sandeen, a junior at Juneau High School, and the other honorees will be featured in the April issue of Teen People, which goes on sale March 7.
Sharon Osbourne promises to visit the Malibu Camp Heartland this summer (there's also one in Minnesota). She didn't say whether she'd bring Ozzy.
